Many Alaskans remember Susan Butcher.
In 2007, the Alaska State Legislature recognized the first Saturday in March as Susan Butcher Day, to honor the life and legacy of one of Alaska’s most legendary dog mushers.
On her journey to becoming a four-time Iditarod champion, Susan lived with her dogs in the remote community of Eureka, Alaska, building the bond between musher and dog that would define her career.
Village races and small community events helped fuel that passion, giving her a place to test herself and keep the spirit and lifestyle of dog mushing and adventure alive.
Today, that spirit continues.
Susan’s daughter, Tekla Butcher-Monson, has found a way to honor her legacy with the Tanana Valley Sled Dog Race. Growing up in the mushing world at Trail Breaker Kennel, Tekla experienced firsthand the lifestyle, mentorship, and community that surround the sport.
T-Dog was created to bring people together through multi-sport racing while fostering mentorship, skill building, and community connection for the next generation of mushers. The race travels through communities across the Tanana Valley - Manley, Minto, and Nenana - before finishing near Susan’s home in Fairbanks.
T-Dog welcomes new mushers, encourages mentorship, and celebrates the spirit of adventure that has always been part of mushing culture.
Now the community has a chance to help.
A generous supporter has pledged $5,000 - but only if we can match it with community donations in the next 7 days.
From Tuesday, March 3rd to Tuesday, March 10th, every donation helps us reach that goal and keep this event growing. Give today and help us unlock the full $5,000 matching challenge.
